What is New Year’s Day?

New Year’s Day (元旦, Yuándàn) in China is celebrated on January 1st, marking the beginning of the Gregorian calendar year. Unlike Chinese New Year (春节, Chūnjié), which follows the lunar calendar, New Year’s Day is a relatively modern holiday in China and does not carry deep cultural traditions. However, it is still recognized as a public holiday and is often seen as a time for relaxation, travel, and light celebrations.

Relevance in China

New Year’s Day is a public holiday in China, but it is not as culturally significant as Chinese New Year. Many people view it as a short break from work rather than a major festive occasion. It is, however, widely acknowledged in urban areas, where Western customs such as New Year’s Eve countdowns, fireworks, and social gatherings have become popular.
