What is Golden Week?

Golden Week refers to two major extended public holiday periods in China:

  1. Chinese New Year Golden Week (春节黄金周) – A national holiday centered around the Chinese Lunar New Year, typically occurring in January or February.
  2. National Day Golden Week (国庆黄金周) – A week-long holiday from October 1st to October 7th, commemorating the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

Both Golden Weeks were introduced to boost domestic tourism, consumer spending, and allow for extended travel and family reunions.

Relevance in China

Golden Weeks are among the busiest travel and consumption periods in China. Millions of people take vacations, visit families, and shop, leading to massive economic activity and the world’s largest human migration during the Chinese New Year Golden Week (Chunyun, 春运).

The National Day Golden Week was introduced in 1999 as part of a strategy to expand the domestic tourism market and give people extended time off. Today, it remains one of the most anticipated public holidays.

Key Features and Impact
